What You Need to Know About Becoming a Physical Therapist?
You’re probably wondering “What does a Physical Therapy Aide do?” Well, as you can guess the duties are broad since there are many ways to assist a patient on recovering depending on the type of injury or physical trauma they endured. This is all based on a case to case basis, but a Physical Therapy Aide should be able to do the following by the end of their training:
- Administer active or passive manual therapeutic exercises
- Instruct, motivate, safeguard, or assist patients practicing functional activities
- Perform regional therapeutic massage
- Schedule patient appointments with physical therapists and coordinate therapist schedules
- Observe patient’s during treatment to compile and evaluate date on patients responses and progress and report to physical therapist
- Secure patients into or onto therapy equipment
- Administer physical agents such as heat, light, sound, water, or electricity for rehabilitative purposes
- Confer with physical therapy staff to discuss and evaluate patient information for planning, modifying or coordinating treatment

What will I learn?
Helping others regain their strength and function as they recover from injuries or other painful conditions is a growing and rewarding occupation. Using exercise, evidence based interventions, and hands on manual therapy, you can assist patients in their journey to more optimum movement and daily activity.
As a PT aide, you will work as a support to the Physical Therapist or Rehabilitation Physician who will directly oversee and guide you in assisting with patient duties as well as overall office procedures. Here are some of the topics you will cover:
- Standard ethical practices and hygiene.
- Ethical practices taught include informed consent, right of refusal, confidentiality and personal, professional and legal boundaries.
- Human anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and how structure relates to function.
- Rules of etiquette, standards from the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Office practices and etiquette such as paperwork, phone screening, and medical records.
- CPR & first aid certification.
- Therapeutic exercise.
- Foundations of therapeutic massage.
- Transporting patients and much more!

The Physical Therapy Aide program at SOCHi provides the student with career training for employment as a Physical Therapy Aide and a Massage Therapist.
This program provides students with the opportunity to learn valuable skills the applies an integrated approach to health and wellness by incorporating medical massage and physical therapy modalities.
Training is provided in the utilization of physical therapy equipment and the treatment of back and limb disorders through medical massage. The program also offers training in physical agents in rehabilitation, anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology, event rehabilitative sports massage, SOAP charting and documentation are reviewed to assist you in keeping accurate health records when working in the field.
CPR and first aid certification, professional ethics & hygiene, and business principles are also covered to round out your learning experience. Finally, because it is crucial to have real world experience, students will complete a 4 week externship in one of our partnered Physical Therapy extern sites. This opportunity for experiential learning and patient interaction in a supervised setting with feedback from your site supervisor and/or the DPT is priceless. Many of our graduates go on to become valued long term employees from their externship experiences.
Graduates of this program are eligible to sit for the MBLEX Exam and apply for voluntary certification from the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) to practice massage therapy in the state of California.

Hygiene practices include universal precautions, preventing the spread of pathogens, and ensuring the safety of patients and staff in the clinical setting.

In this course, the student will be introduced to the general concepts of human anatomy and physiology and how structure relates to function.
The overall study of cells, tissues, and an overview of the body systems and broad anatomical and physiological concepts will be covered. Additionally, the student will gain a general understanding of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems in this course.
Terminology related to diagnosis and treatment, as well as identifying and understanding medical terms in general will be part of the course material. The student will gain an understanding of the relationship between the anatomy and physiology concepts and systems covered in this course with the practice of massage therapy.

With more and more people populating our country, this means that the need for physical therapy is rising! It’s quite simple, more people means more exercise and movement which leads to more injury which leads to more physical therapy.
