Looking For a Job MBC
A Growing Field
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “total employment in the U.S. economy is projected to grow to 161 million, or 10.8 percent, over the 2012–2022 decade and add 15.6 million jobs to the 2012 employment level of 145.4 million.” What does that mean for the world of healthcare and health information and specifically, Medical Billing and Coding? According to the same Outlook Handbook the U.S. BLS released, the healthcare information industry will increase by 21%. This opens up many doors for anyone attempting to look for a job in the Health Industry which includes Physical Therapy Aide, Medical Assistance, Personal Fitness Training, Massage Therapy and even the Medical Billing and Coding field. In fact, while the industry is multiplying immensely, it seems like the perfect time to get certified at The Southern California Health Institute and get into the field. In this growing field of Medical Billing and Coding, there are many different ways to get a credible job and build your resume to move up the ladder and optimize your salary.
First things first, we can start off with the SOCHi Career Services & Resources Center. This center is run by a group of staff members whose primary purpose is to assist our students and alumni with their career goals and different resources needed to reach those goals. In the Career Services & Resource Center, you can find many tools to alleviate the stress of looking for a job or the obstacles that may hinder you from going out and doing your best. These tools can vary from learning about housing opportunities to have a stable environment go out into the world or Health Clinics to help you get rid of any ailments that may hinder you. Aside from the helpful resources in the center such as housing opportunities, childcare, and drug abuse counseling, the Career Services & Resource Center sits down with our students and assesses what steps they need to take to meet their career goals. Our counselors have extensive knowledge of the field and communicate with instructors about how to find the best jobs for our students. When you go to the Career Services & Resource Center, we make sure that you have a personalized experience. As you may know, everyone is different, and that means the people that come through the center all have unique qualities about them. Some may love Medical Billing, some may enjoy Medical Coding, some may only want to work in a clinic as opposed to a private office, and some may even need a doctor that speaks Spanish. We take this into account and ensure that we help every student that comes through our doors in finding the next step for them. Alumni can even go back to the Career Services & Resources Center to get more information and leads about jobs throughout their medical career. We want to make sure that we spread the message of hard work, persistence, and commitment. During and after SOCHI’s 9-month program, Medical Billing & Coding students have free range to use anything from our brochures, computers and one-on-one personalized counselors in the Career Resource Center to find their next job!
Surf The Web
Since we are on the topic, computers are also a great way to optimize your search for a job in the Medical Billing & Coding field. The internet is a massive bank of information that assists prospective Medical Billers & Coders with finding the perfect fit for them. Various blogs, forums, and search engines can have tips and job listings for you to look into. This may be overwhelming, but you can quickly start with just a generic Google search such as, “Medical Billing & Coding Jobs.” Maybe, switch up the words a bit after that. Try searching just, “Medical Biller” or “Coder Jobs.” Switching up key words can be a surprise that can lead you to a career opportunity you would’ve missed out on if you didn’t dig just a bit deeper. Don’t be scared to scroll down the way and click along the way.
Aside from generic search engines, you can also look for Medical Billing and Coding forums or websites that harbor specific information and job postings in your growing field. “The American Association of Professional Coders” has a useful job board posted up on their website. This job board can be found at AAPC.com/jobs, and on it, you can search jobs via keyword or phrase. There are also various filters you can adjust that suit your preferences such as geographical location, focus in the field, post date, and relevance. The AAPC job board is a credible source for steady jobs because employers purchase listings on the board since they know it has garnered a strong ethos to carry out this cycle. Remember that just like you are looking for a credible job, employers are also looking for credible Medical Billers and Coders.
You also don’t have to limit yourself to staying online. It’s evident that methods of communication have changed since the 70’s from conversations to emails and meetings to group messages. That being said, networking and building connections face-to-face are critical to securing a fulfilling job in this field. Networking online can often lead to dead ends and a lack of authenticity. We should never underestimate the power of face-to-face communication.
You can network in person at various conventions or fairs with a focus on the Healthcare Industry. You can also get in touch with the instructors that have taught you and helped you get certified. They have been in the industry long enough to show you; they would have more than enough different leads to assist you in getting a job. This can also come in handy at the Career Resource Center where our staff can lead you to different networking opportunities. Networking can also be done when you volunteer in your field. Along with their effective online job board, the AAPC also has local chapters that hold meetings which can hold fantastic opportunities to network with people just like you. When you network in person, you can find the interpersonal skills and absorb the information you hear to assist you in the various job interviews you will hopefully be sitting in on.
